Hot Climate, Cool Roof
How Light Colors Can Benefit Your Home — and Your Pockets
Angie Lewis, WriterOn a hot day, are you more likely to wear a white shirt or black shirt outside? If you answered white, that means you know, as a lighter color, white helps to reflect more of the sun’s heat away from your body. The same is true for shingles.
If you live in a region that gets extremely hot weather, your roof will benefit from light-colored shingles, which help to reflect heat and damaging UV rays and prevent thermal shock (caused by rapid temperature fluctuations) — elements that can prematurely degrade asphalt shingles.
Because they reflect more heat, lighter-colored shingles can keep a roof surface up to 20 degrees cooler than those with black or dark-colored shingles.
And when your roof is cooler, your air conditioning system doesn’t have to work as hard, which means you can also save on cooling costs.
When you’re ready for a new roof, consider one of these beautiful, light colors available from Atlas Roofing:
- Pinnacle® Pristine shingles featuring Scotchgard™ Protector in Pearl
- StormMaster® Shake shingles featuring Scotchgard™ Protector in Silver Stone
