The (Pinnacle) Pristine Treatment
Pyramid Roofing Installs Atlas Shingles On 30-Year-Old Virginia Apartments
Paul Casseri, Product Manager"The owners felt that the Pinnacle Pristine shingle was the right choice."
Hampton Center Apartments, a 10-building complex in Hampton, VA, was built in 1985. After 30 years, the roofs were worn and in need of replacement. Because they were in such poor condition, complete tear-offs were needed for each building.
Pyramid Roofing, a residential and commercial roofing company based in Hampton, VA, won the contract.
“I think we got the job because of our reputation as a BBB-accredited business with an A+ rating,” said Dan Worstell, president of Pyramid Roofing. “The other factor that probably convinced the owner was our presentation of the benefits of Atlas Pinnacle® Pristine shingles.”
Battling The Elements — And Competition
Pyramid Roofing has been in business since 1986, serving Southeast Virginia with branches in Newport News, Norfolk, Williamsburg and Virginia Beach. The company began offering Atlas Roofing products in spring 2014. For the Hampton Center Apartments project, Pyramid installed 1,166 squares of Atlas Pinnacle Pristine shingles.
“The owners, after hearing and seeing our proposal, felt that the Pinnacle Pristine shingle was the right choice,” said Worstell. “It offers the best in protection and appearance at a rather affordable price.”
Atlas manufactures Pinnacle Pristine high-performance shingles in 19 attractive shades — including Natural Expressions colors — that add dimension and charm to the beauty of any building.
The Hampton Center Apartments owners also chose Pinnacle Pristine because the shingles’ distinct shadow lines and oversized dimensions give its roofs a stunning look. Pinnacle Pristine shingles are also manufactured with the power of Scotchgard™ Protector, which allows them to resist the ugly black streaks caused by algae and retain their color for many years.
“That lifetime algae resistance from the Scotchgard Protector is by far the biggest benefit to the owner,” said Worstell. “Being so close to the ocean, this part of Virginia gets a lot of moisture. Offering shingles that can resist algae has differentiated us from our competitors who are specifying other manufacturers’ brands.”
Worstell found that installing Pinnacle Pristine shingles also resulted in less waste. A 40-square job required only 2,400 shingles, compared to 2,560 of the average competitor’s shingle. Pinnacle’s quick-nail Sweet Spot™ meant the job used 9,600 nails, where other shingles would require 15,360 nails. Overall, the job was completed in three weeks with 160 fewer shingles and 5,760 fewer nails.
In addition to Pinnacle, Pyramid Roofing also installed Atlas Pro-Cut® Hip and Ridge shingles and Pro-Cut Starter shingles, both of which also feature Scotchgard Protector.
Writing The Book On Roofing
On Aug. 1, 2016, Pyramid Roofing celebrated 30 years of doing business. Worstell attributes his company’s success to solid service and the craftsmanship of his crews.
“With our service and maintenance agreements, we ensure our customers that their roof will provide dependable coverage for years to come,” he said. “Each Pyramid Roofing service agreement includes an annual 17-point roof inspection to guarantee the roof we install will last.”
Like every job, Worstell said the Hampton Center Apartments project was a learning experience, which inspired him to write a book about what he has seen in his years as a residential roofing contractor. He did this partly to honor a promise he made to his wife.
“The idea for the book came about when my wife told me, ‘Our new roof had better not leak and cause the kind of damage you talk about to your customers,’” he recalled. “In the book I tell stories, both funny and horrifying, about my clients’ real-life experiences with roofing and Mother Nature.”
The book, 10 Simple Steps You Can Do That Will Save You Thousands of Dollars and Add Years to the Life of Your Roof is available for free on the Pyramid Roofing website.
Worstell believes Atlas Roofing's policy of standing by its products is one of his best bidding points.
“We are closing more jobs because of the value Atlas brings to the table with its Lifetime Limited Warranty,” he said. “That is protection against all manufacturing defects and algae streaks. In addition, they offer a 130 mph Wind Limited Warranty.” He also noted that Atlas Roofing helped Pyramid’s bid process immensely by taking price out of the equation with the homeowner after comparing costs against other shingle brands.
