A Beautiful Kentucky Home
McCuiston Roofing Exceeds Expectations On Complex Roof Project
Michael Lawson, WriterThe roof was for a large, new-construction, single-family residence. Though only one story, the building had a complex roof with a steep 12/12 pitch, 13 ridgelines and 18 valleys. The design of the roof gave the homeowner the dramatic look he wanted as well as a large attic space.
The homeowner opted for Pinnacle Pristine® shingles in Pristine Heather because he liked the color and appearance of the shingles.
Other products used on the project were Pro-Cut® Hip and Ridge shingles, Pro-Cut Starter shingles and Gorilla Guard® 30 underlayment. The steepness of the roof required two layers of hip and ridge shingles. Using all of the components together made the home eligible for the Atlas Signature Select® Roofing System warranty, another selling point for the homeowner.
Job Challenges
In addition to the extreme slope, the roof faced an issue common to other homes in Kentucky: algae.
“Algae is a real problem in western Kentucky,” said Darrin McCuiston, owner of McCuiston Roofing in Murray, KY. “Most unprotected shingles start having black streaks within six to seven years, at best.”
Pinnacle Pristine shingles are manufactured with Scotchgard™ Protector, which helps them resist the black streaks caused by algae. Algae protection is guaranteed for the life of the roof under the Atlas Lifetime Algae Resistance Limited Warranty.
About The Contractor
McCuiston has been offering residential and commercial roofing services in western Kentucky for more than a decade.
He began working as a roofer part time while he was still in high school, but became a cop after graduation instead. After 20 years as a police officer, he chose to open his own roofing business.
Formerly a Master Elite GAF contractor, McCuiston participated in the Atlas “Try It” program in which contractors install five Atlas system jobs and earn an iPad. He was hooked and soon became such an avid “Atlas guy” that he drove more than two hours to the 2015 Atlas Road Show in Nashville, TN, to learn more about how Atlas could improve his roofing business. He’s been selling Atlas products almost exclusively since.
“More than half of all roofs we install are full Signature Select installations,” he said. “I am emphatic in my belief in Atlas shingles. No other shingle can match their performance and warranty.”
Benefits To The Contractor
One of the reasons that McCuiston believes in Atlas shingles is that they are good for his crew.
Pinnacle Pristine shingles are manufactured with Atlas’ High-Performance (HP) technology. The larger shingle design means considerable labor savings for the contractor. Because of the bigger exposure, fewer shingles are needed to complete a job and crews spend less time on the roof. The shingles also feature a 1½-inch Sweet Spot™ that McCuiston finds to be a real advantage.
“The Sweet Spot is so helpful to my crew,” he said. “It helps them to quickly know where to place nails.”
McCuiston also appreciates the Atlas Pro™ app, which he said “makes estimating so easy and allows me to send promotional materials directly to my customers. Plus I can use it to directly connect to EagleView®.”
Benefits To The Homeowner
The homeowner wanted an exceptional roof that would protect his house for years to come.
To achieve the goal, McCuiston recommended Atlas shingles with Scotchgard Protector when he and the homeowner met for their initial consultation. He later invited Mike Walker, the area sales rep for Atlas, to a joint meeting and product demonstration, which convinced the homeowner to choose the Pinnacle Pristine shingles and the other components of the Atlas Signature Select Roofing System and its associated warranty.
Atlas backs Pinnacle Pristine shingles with a Lifetime Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects as well as a 130 mph Wind Limited Warranty. The Lifetime Limited Warranty provides greater coverage than other manufacturers’ warranties for comparable shingles.
Atlas enhances the protection through its Signature Select Warranty, which provides non-prorated coverage for labor and material for up to 15 years.
With that kind of protection, no matter how long the sun shines bright, one resident of the Bluegrass State will be enjoying his beautiful Kentucky home.
